Legionella Pneumophila is a bacterium that occurs naturally in water. Outside of a man made environment it's usually found in low numbers. When Legionella Pneumophila enters a man made water system that is not maintained well it can multiply and spread throughout the water system and can then be transmitted to users of the water system via an aerosol.

Recorded outbreaks of Legionnaire’s disease have been associated with many different water systems including the following;
